Scientists create home test to measure antibodies against Covid

Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in the United States, have developed a home test capable of measuring the levels of neutralizing antibodies against the infection caused by the coronavirus.

Studies have already shown that antibodies produced after an infection or by vaccines fall naturally over time. MIT scientists hope the new test will be used by people to track how long they will be protected against Sars-CoV-2.

While it can be used by anyone, the researchers underscore the difference the tests can make in the lives of patients with conditions that impair immune responses, such as cancer or use of immune-depressing drugs.

Detailed in an article published in the journal Cell Reports Methods, the test is still in the prototype phase. It uses the same technology as the rapid antigen test, which reveals the result on a card. However, in place of nasal discharge, users should collect a drop of blood from the finger.

A smartphone application interprets the results and quantifies the level of neutralizing antibodies, which have the function of preventing the virus from attaching to human cells.
