ANTI-SMOKING GROUP STARTS NEW CLASS

ANTI-SMOKING GROUP STARTS NEW CLASS

A new support group for people who want to stop smoking will be formed in October. The aim is to motivate smokers to quit and increase their access to effective methods for treating nicotine addiction. In the group, users are prepared for cessation, receiving clinical evaluation, intensive approach by the multidisciplinary team and, if necessary, drug therapy. The symptoms of abstinence are discussed, as well as the suggestion of strategies to control the urge to smoke and to break the stimuli of those who practice the practice. And when necessary, they are followed up with follow-up consultations to ensure support in the initial phase of abstinence, when the risks of relapse are greatest.

Smoking is a disease

The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies smoking as dependence on the drug nicotine, present in any tobacco derivative, be it cigarettes, cigarillos, cigars, pipes, straw cigarettes, roll tobacco or hookah.

The number of deaths caused by cigarette consumption has increased from 4 million at the beginning of the century to more than 7 million, warned the World Health Organization (WHO). Half of the people who use tobacco die from smoking-associated diseases, the leading preventable cause of non-communicable diseases.

In addition, tobacco smoke releases thousands of tons of carcinogens, toxic substances and greenhouse gases.

Nicotine dependence is very complex, and its treatment requires self-knowledge of the reasons that make each person smoke, guidance on how to stop smoking, how to resist the urge to smoke and, above all, how to live without cigarettes.
Benefits of quitting smoking

The decision to stop smoking is always important at any point in life. When quitting smoking, some benefits appear very quickly, in a matter of minutes, hours, and add up, resulting in a better quality of life in all aspects:

After 20 minutes: blood pressure and pulse return to normal;
After 2 hours: there is no more nicotine circulating in the blood;
After 8 hours: the oxygen level in the blood normalizes;
After 12 to 24 hours: the lungs work better;
After 2 days: the sense of smell perceives the smells better and the palate tastes the food better;
After 3 weeks: breathing becomes easier and circulation improves;
After 1 year: the risk of death from myocardial infarction is halved.
