Heads up! Monkeypox is completely different from Covid-19

Monkeypox, Monkeypox or Monkeypox, as it is known worldwide, was diagnosed in 1958 in a group of monkeys, which gave rise to the name of the disease. However, the virus is more common in rodents and the first human case was identified in 1970.

It is a disease transmitted by prolonged contact, such as sexual intercourse, since the virus is also found in semen, and through the respiratory tract through droplets expelled by the infected person. Due to this transmissibility, it is necessary to use masks for protection and also the need for isolation when infected. With all these recommendations, people are insecure and afraid because they are comparing it to the coronavirus.

“It is important to point out that monkeypox is completely different from covid-19, as it does not cause pneumonia and other complications of the coronavirus. In addition, diseases are transmitted by different types of viruses. So, it probably won’t become a pandemic”, explains Dr. Dania Abdel Rahman, Coordinator of the Clinical Infectious Diseases and Hospital Infection Control sector and Infectologist at Albert Sabin Hospital (HAS).

Initially, the main symptoms are muscle pain, fever and general malaise. Soon after, skin lesions appear, usually starting in the genital region. “However, this is not a rule, as the patient may observe initial lesions in other regions, such as the face, trunk, limbs. Such lesions appear as small pustules, with yellowish and purulent content, and after that they hatch, open and dry, turning into crusts”, explains the infectologist.

Transmission can occur throughout the period in which there is injury, however, when they are blistered and with secretion, they are much more transmissible, because it is in this secretion that the virus is found. When the wounds turn into a crust, the transmissibility decreases, but it still exists. “For this reason, isolation time of at least fourteen days is recommended or as long as the patient has injuries”, adds the doctor.

There is currently no specific treatment for monkeypox, such as antivirals or other medications. “We are taking care of these cases with symptomatic medication, especially pain medication, since the lesions are very painful. The orientation is to wash the wounds with soap and water, use opioid analgesics, which are stronger and more potent drugs, and avoid contact with other people, especially sexual intercourse. It is also extremely important, as the virus spreads through droplets, the use of masks by both the patient and those around him”, warns Dr. Rahman.

Unfortunately, there is still no vaccine for this disease. The smallpox vaccine, applied around the world, including in Brazil, until 1979, may offer some protection against this new virus, however, it is still under study and there are no definitive conclusions about the fact.
