Gynecologist lists 4 tips to avoid stretch marks during pregnancy

One of the most common side effects of pregnancy is the appearance of stretch marks — according to the American Academy of Dermatology, about 90% of women develop stretch marks before or after childbirth. Red and white lines are caused by the breakdown of collagen fibers, structures responsible for the structuring and elasticity of the skin.

The skin has strong and interconnected fibers, but stretch marks can arise due to rapid and excessive growth in some region. In the case of pregnant women, the entire body changes, especially the abdomen region. To avoid this process, gynecologist and obstetrician Carlos Moraes, a doctor at Santa Casa de São Paulo, lists some important tips for the period of pregnancy.

“There is an increase in weight during the gestational period, triggering a greater distension of the abdomen and, consequently, the rupture of the skin fibers. Therefore, weight control is essential. Not only for the aesthetic side, but for the health of the baby and the mother. If there is an exaggerated weight gain, the woman can have several health problems that can also affect the fetus”, says the gynecologist.

How to prevent stretch marks in pregnancy

1. Balanced diet

Pregnant women can include foods rich in vitamin C and antioxidant substances, such as beta-carotene and flavonoids, in their diet. The nutrients act as collagen stimulants in the skin, contributing to the fight against stretch marks. They can be found in citrus fruits, for example.

Foods rich in vitamin E, such as seeds, whole grains and vegetable oils, serve to protect the body and contain properties that help prevent skin aging.

During pregnancy, it is common for pregnant women to have cravings for certain foods. To avoid further problems, it is important to be careful with exaggerations. The doctor advises that the woman should eat in small portions and pay attention to the contents of the plate.

2. Appropriate clothing

With the increase in the size of the breasts and belly, the ideal is to wear appropriate clothes, which are comfortable and according to the mother’s body. Wearing clothes that are too tight or too loose can impair blood circulation.

3. Use of moisturizers

The use of specific creams and oils for pregnant women is essential to keep the skin soft, avoid blemishes (common in some pregnant women) and stretch marks. Almond, rosehip and grapeseed oil are the most suitable. The moisturizer should be applied every day, especially on the belly, with a light massage to activate blood circulation.

4. Postpartum care

Stretch marks often appear as reddish lines and, over time, turn white. The doctor explains that, when they reach the white color, they are hardly eliminated.

But there are ways to disguise them through specific treatments. Depending on the color and intensity of the stretch marks, the specialist will decide the best procedure. Current options stimulate pigment-producing cells, restoring skin elasticity and promoting collagen production.
